The Strayer House

New Market, Virginia

The Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation’s headquarters are located in the historic Strayer House in New Market, Virginia, at 9386 Congress Street along the route of the historic Valley Turnpike.

The original portion of the building was constructed circa 1808 for John Strayer’s home and mercantile business, and was visited by historic figures such as Stonewall Jackson and witness to events such as the Battle of New Market. The Foundation’s offices are located on the second floor of the building, but the first floor is highlighted by a Civil War Orientation Center, Jackson’s Corner Cafe, a small gift shop and a visitor information desk. The orientation center helps visitors understand the Civil War history of the Valley and then direct them to the sites where they can explore that history today.
