Preservation Successes
The Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation has proudly preserved
7,010 Acres of Battlefield
For more than 20 years, the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation has worked with a variety of partners to protect the region’s remarkable Civil War landscapes.
Together the Battlefields Foundation and its public and private partners have:
Protected or acquired more than 7,000 battlefield acres. Once preserved, the Foundation works to open these sites to the public and interpret their historic significance. Much of this preserved land remains in farming use, as it was during the Civil War, contributing to the local agricultural economy.
Worked with landowners and local governments to develop preservation plans for four of the Valley’s battlefields: Cross Keys/Port Republic and Fisher’s Hill/Toms Brook. Both plans have been adopted as land use policy by their local governments.
Protected significant properties at the Third Winchester, Fisher’s Hill, Cedar Creek, Toms Brook, McDowell, and Cross Keys battlefields.
Improved water quality in the Chesapeake Bay watershed by protecting land adjacent to waterways and streams.
Preserved more than 500 acres within the Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park’s 3,700-acre boundary.
