Help Restore Third Winchester Battlefield

We must tear down a non-historic house at the Third Winchester battlefield and I'm asking for your help to get that done. We can match your gift dollar for dollar up to $20,000!

There are countless non-historic structures on our battlefields from one end of the Valley to the other. Many of them must be removed before a set deadline as a condition of the grants we received to help preserve these properties.

We are up against just such a deadline and have the opportunity to remove an unsightly house from the Third Winchester Battlefield. Tearing down this building will be the first step in restoring the critical battlefield lands that you have saved on the historic Redbud Road. Once restored, this open vista will provide visitors to the James R. Wilkins Winchester Battlefields Visitor Center with a clear view of the battlefield as it appeared in 1864. As part of the project, historic fencing will be constructed to restore the historic fence line along Redbud Road.

For you and I, standing on a battlefield and looking across the landscape stirs something in our soul. To be on the ground and realize that all around you, great armies collided to decide the fate of our nation is a powerful experience.

This experience is made even more impactful when the hands of time can be turned backward by restoring the battlefield to its condition on the day of the battle.

If we can inspire even one future preservationist or one young person to look more deeply into history then the work and expense of taking down this structure will have been worth it.
