When Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee launched his second invasion of the north in June 1863, the Shenandoah Valley was the perfect invasion route, but there was one significant obstacle in Lee's way - the sizeable Union force in Winchester commanded by Gen. Robert H. Milroy.
