Fridays at the Front: “The Flames Leaped Upwards”: Civil War Mount Jackson

Tour of Mt. Jackson’s Civil sites. Situated along the Valley Pike, and at the southern terminus of the Manassas Gap Railroad, Mt. Jackson became the location of a Confederate General Hospital and an adjacent cemetery. Lying just north of the pivotal position of Rude’s Hill, it was frequently visited by opposing troops as they marched up and down the Valley; was the scene of numerous smaller fights – and the final stages of “The Woodstock Races” after the Battle of Tom’s Brook; and was at the center of the climatic days of “The Burning.”
