Fall 2010 Semester

Cost: $20
Date:  Saturday, October 30, 2010
Instructor: Jonathan A. Noyalas

Seminar Summary:
After years of defeats and setbacks in the Shenandoah Valley, Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant deemed to eliminate the Confederacy’s Breadbasket as a diversionary theater of war by placing a consolidated army under command of Gen. Philip H. Sheridan to aggressively drive Confederate forces from the Valley and also eliminate it as a source of provender to Confederate forces in Virginia. After nearly a month of military maneuvering, Sheridan struck his first decisive blow against Confederate operations in the Valley at the Third Battle of Winchester, September 19, 1864. This one day seminar and tour will explore the decisions that led to this bloody battle, the tactical evolution of the fight, and the battle’s consequences. A morning lecture about Rebecca Wright and her role in intelligence gathering will set the stage for the afternoon tour of sites associated with the Third Battle of Winchester. The fee covers the cost of the morning lecture, handouts, and tour. Pre-registration is required. Space is limited so sign up quickly. Participants are advised that the battlefield tour involves a fair amount of walking over uneven terrain.
